It works for me running Sequoia 15.7.2.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Your post sort of scared me a little so I went and tested this on:

2010 Macbook Air - High Sierra

2013 Macbook Air -- Big Sur

2015 iMac -- Monterey

2019 Macbook Pro -- Sequoia

2023 Macbook Pro -- Sequoia

On all of them, Apple's instructions for selecting multiple items this way does work, at least for me.

I am wondering if there is something with your keyboard or mapping of its keys ("shortcuts" you have defined?).

Try Old Toad's suggestion, but if the problem persists, explore further your keyboard settings and "accessibility" settings on your Mac. Something may have been changed or redefined.

Can not duplicate this issue using macOS 26.1 Tahoe on a M4 Desktop and Apple Magic Mouse

Nor can I duplicate this issue using a 15" M4 MBA with Tahoe 26.1 and using the Builtin Trackpad

Illustration below using " "Select multiple items: Press and hold the Command key, then click the items (they don’t need to be next to each other)."

You may also consider updating from Sequoia 15.6 as per your byline to the current Sequoia Sequoia 15.7.2
