When I click on the crop tool it shows me the crop lines, no problem. But 1 out 5 times as I'm moving my cursor to the crop lines to adjust the crop, the crop feature goes away and it's back to the default screen.

How much free storage do you have on your "iPhone? Settings>General>iPhone Storage." Is the used storage less than 90% of the total?

Your signature refers to a Mac, but the title says iPhone. You don't give the OS for either. What are you actually asking about?
By "Crop lines" do you mean the corners that move are what disappears, or do you mean that the reference lines for lining up the subject are what disappears?
Are you using a preset aspect ratio, or are you using freeform? In iOS18, freeform was the default. I believe that in iOS 26 the original aspect ration is the default.
Do you use iCloud Photos?
How much free storage do you have on whichever device you're talking about? Is it over 10%?
I just noticed that, thanks! I clicked on my 2021 iMac. Yes the corners that move to make your crop. I'm using Original for aspect ratio.
Yes I use iCloud Photos. I have 1TB of storage left.
Actually once I click on the crop tool and the crop bars go on the photo, before I even get a chance to move my cursor the crop feature turns off and goes back the the opening editing position. where you have the 5 options to work on your photo.

That's likely the problem. When my 1TB Mac Air got to less than 150 GB free some photo apps began doing some crazy things. Apple recommends that we keep at least 10% of our storage free, but I am no2 keeping using 15% a the critical value. I moved lots of files to a small (1 ounce) SSD that I could carry around with my computer.
You need to free up enough storage for Photos to be able to manipulate files.
