Touch ID not working properly with 15.7.1

I upgraded my laptop last night to MacOS 15.7.1. This morning, I could not use Touch ID properly for logging in. It takes about 8-10 tries before I can actually log in to my user account. Touch ID works just fine with any applications or websites requiring fingerprint authentication. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

***UPDATE*** This behavior is happening on a MacBook with Touch Bar. TouchID works once the sign "Touch ID..." appears on the Touch Bar, after (now) 10-15 tries. Restarting the laptop and deleting/recreating fingerprint did not solve the issue.

If I wait until the Touch ID notice appears, which takes about 5 seconds (I timed it), then it works fine. Until that notice appears, only a password will work. Trying 10 or 15 times will do you no good until that "Touch ID" wording appears.

I don't know why there is a delay and it seems that this should not happen, but I can live with 5 seconds, there are bigger things to worry about. Touch ID still works. I have read that this is related to handoff settings when an iPhone is nearby, but I haven't cared enough to test that out.

Touch ID unreliability for login after ma… - Apple Community

" I have seen this issue discussed at length

It usually, not always, effects INTEL computers equipped with the Touch ID configuration

If what I have seen elsewhere, there could be some Firmware issue and related to the firmware used in the Secure Enclave

Should this be true, there is nothing any of us can do to mitigate this issue

That is, apart from waiting for an addition update for Sequoia and to be issued by Apple "

Thanks to Steve626 and Owl-53 for your replies!

@Owl-53: yup, I forgot to mention this is an Intel-based laptop and you are correct, these issues with Sequoia do not always affect Intel machines (my wife has an identical laptop and her problems are very different than mine).

@Steve626: I only tried your suggestion once but it seemed to work. I'd always like to collect more data points, but hey, this is promising! Thanks!

Sorry to say this but Apple seems to have " dropped the ball " when it comes to the Intel Computers

I am aware, there might be another update for Sequoia to arrive sometime soon

Let us hope 🤞 if there is one, it may fix this issue without the need for hijinks like you and other are required to perform

No comfort in what follows

Have a 15" M4 MBA that came with Sequoia 15.5 and since upgraded to macOS 26 Tahoe 26.0.1

Touch ID work just as well now ( Tahoe 26.0.1 " as it did under Sequoia 15.6.1 and when it upGraded
