Find my airpods feature not working

I’ve opened the Find My app and selected AirPods in an attempt to find them. I’ve tried the play sound feature but nothing is heard. The map claims both my phone and AirPods are home with me but the AirPods can’t be found. Once I get within 5ft, there’s just a green background and a white circle. I’ve pressed the speaker icon on this screen, still no sound is heard. I feel like it’s showing me the location of where they last were and not where they are now.
