Apple Pencil Heating Up

When using Apple Pencil on my iPad mini, it starts to heat up About halfway down the pencil. When I stop using it , it cools off. This does not relate to charging the pencil, just using it to tap on the iPad.

is this dangerous (ie, risk of fire)? Could this be caused by the most recent iPad update? Is there a fix or should I just toss the old pencil.
