airpods won’t connect to phone after i take them off

i’ve had my airpods max for over a year now but today they started acting weird. when i take them off and put them back on, they won’t connect. it’s like they have completely forgotten my phone. i’ve had to fully reset them just to connect them to my phone. putting them in the case does nothing, when i charge them the light comes on, but if i try to put them over my head nothing happens. is it over for me 💔
