How to hide the email list in Mail on iPadOS 26 in portrait mode?

In previous versions of iPadOS, when the iPad was in portrait mode, the list of emails in Mail would disappear, so there would be maximum space for the content of each email. That doesn’t happen anymore in iPadOS 26. The list is there no matter what orientation you use the iPad in. it’s possible to resize the two columns but only slightly. And I have found no way to manually make the list go away. Is there? I’m not talking about the sidebar with the mail boxes and folders which can be hidden.

There are a couple of workarounds that might achieve a full-screen view of the message:

  1. Open the email in a New Window/Stage Manager Window:
    • Double-tap on the email message in the list. This should open the email in a new, separate window.
    • In this new window, you should be able to make it Full Screen (for example, by using the green dot in the traffic light controls at the top of the window if you are using a feature like Stage Manager, or by manipulating the window into Full Screen view).
  1. Use Windowed App View (Stage Manager):
    • If you are using Stage Manager, you can resize the Mail app window until the message list panel disappears, leaving only the focused email.
