Can't send mail from alias email addresses since upgrading to macOS Tahoe

Just updated to macOS Tahoe. I receive emails TO my various icloud aliases without a problem. However when I want to respond to those emails, the send FROM email defaults to my primary email account, not the alias to which the email was sent.

Since the entire point of having an alias is to keep private your main email address, and thus it would entirely defeat the purpose of having an alias to not allow sending email from it, I am assuming there is some option or setting I need to set somewhere?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 15.6

SOLUTION:

  • Open Mail --> Settings
  • On the left you will see all of your mail accounts. Select your primary iCloud account on the left side of window
  • Navigate to the Accounts Tab
  • On the Accounts tab, under Email Address, you will see your primary iCloud account email address. Click it and a drop down menu will appear with an option to Edit Email Addresses...
  • Click the + sign and manually type your email Alias
  • Repeat for all Aliases
  • Restart Mail

You should now again be able to send emails from your aliases.

Note: I am running macOS Tahoe 26.1.

After updating to version 26.1, I opened the Settings window, went to the Accounts tab, and found a drop-down list of email addresses. Normally, it shows a list of addresses, but mine only showed the primary address and an item called "Add New" or something like that (I can't remember the exact name). Clicking it allowed me to add a new address directly in the Mail app (without being redirected to the iCloud webpage, as is usually the case). I added one of the missing addresses, then opened a new email, opened the "From" drop-down list, the app froze for a few seconds, and then ALL the missing addresses reappeared.

Now I'm thinking that maybe there was no need to edit the addresses in the settings window, maybe it would have been enough to just open a new email message, expand the "From" list, and have the app reread all the addresses.

I have a similar issue on MacBook Pro M2. Clean-installed Tahoe 26.0.1, Mail app for my iCloud account shows only primary email address as available, all custom-domain addresses disappeared. Also I checked Console logs and noticed that every time I access Mail's settings or open AppleID in System Settings an EXC_GUARD crash (whatever it is) is logged. BTW, iPhone's Mail on iOS 26 works fine though.
