Magic Trackpad click-drag issue on MacBook Air with macOS Tahoe

'24 Macbook Air, OS Tahoe 26.0.1, trackpad 3.1.1. Won't "hold" a click and drag, and sometimes when I click down on an item and hold, expecting to be able to drag or select, it releases the hold regardless of pressure. when this happens on an icon it launches the item/app, and that's extremely annoying. I don't want it to open, I want to drag it somewhere. Any ideas?
