The HP Laser Jet Pro 4001dw does connect with AirPrint. It has the AirPrint logo on box. If Apple says can not be done call HP - they'll do it. Don't know why Apple not know but each Apple Support person knows different stuff.

I would say by default apple would have no idea how
airprint is a generic interface apple made so all printers on a network show up and can be printed to without any extra steps
if there are extra steps in term of getting a HP LaserJet Pro 4001dw to work with airprint then it's steps that hp added to the mix, there are 1000s of printer manufactors out there so apple would never be able to keep up as to how one needs to configure those of them that support airprint to well work with airprint.
sort of like if you buy a toyota vehicle and then buy a blaupunkt car radio and have issues with it, then toyota will not be able to fix your issue, but blaupunkt who makes the radio would.
