No commas show in Bookshop.org ebooks on iPad. (Commas do show when reading the Bookshop.org ebooks on my laptop, and commas do show when reading other stuff on iPad.)

Some text in Apple's 'Books' won't highlight. Why? So I've encountered this before and it's so aggravating. Is there a fix? I open a text from which I'm quoting for teaching purposes and I go to highlight a section to read later and it won't highlight. Sometimes it's a few words; sometimes a sentence; sometimes a paragraph or more. But other sections highlight just fine. I keep telling myself that I don't need both Books and Kindle, but this is so frustrating--ESPECIALLY when many of the books cost MORE from Apple, but I love the ability to easily access across all my devices. Anyone know of a fix? Is this even an app issue or a text formatting issue in the ebook? Thanks!
