USB-C to Digital AV Multiport Adapter does not charge MacBook Air 2020 M1 16GB

I had an off-brand adapter, and it didn't charge the computer. So I bought an Apple branded adapter, and it still doesn't work.

I have an external monitor (HDMI) and an external camera (USB-A) plugged in to the adapter, and both work. However, when I plug the power cable in to the USB-C port, it does not charge the computer (lightning bolt does not appear).

When I plug the charging cord directly into either USB-C port on the MacBook, it charges as expected.

When I plug *only* the charging cable into the Adapter, it does not charge the computer. I tried both USB-C ports on the MacBook.

Has anyone else faced this?
