Photos go blank when using Open Viewer option

When I double-click a photo to enlarge it in Photos it appears briefly before going blank. The viewer turns white when the photo disappears. I know it's in the Viewer mode because there's a row of thumbnails along the bottom (all black) and I can navigate using the arrow keys. Photos will flash and disappear after a moment as I navigate which makes it very difficult to preview my library.

This happens regardless of how my grid is displayed, same issue when the thumbnail grid is set to square or full aspect ratio. File type isn't part of it, neither is original vs. edited. I get the same issue for JPG or HEIC and the vast majority of my photos are unedited within the app.

In case it's helpful, the spacebar doesn't launch the assigned Image > Open Viewer action. I get an error noise and can only double-click so it's really making using Photos a pain.

Currently running Photos version 8.0 (560.0.113) under macOS Ventura 13.7.4 (22H420) but this issue has been throughout multiple versions and earlier OSes (going back to High Sierra). I'm trying to do more in Photos recently to manage my library but it's like pulling teeth!

Any help is appreciated!
