need urgent help OS26 Tahoe en problems with foto app

we updated our IMAC 27" from 2020 to Tahoe 26 and now we face a problem;em with the foto app. I can see a photo library with info about 800 GB and I can see a photo app about 42 MB.

we tried to recover the photo library but the system stucks always around 22% ....

we have pictures on this library with a broken link to an external HDD (this one crashed) and it is a reason to change computers to a mac mini.

how to recover ... the library we can not allow to loose 15 years on pictures :(

I wanted to open the photo app but it showed the option recover - goes fast to 20% but then it stays at 20% and maybe 22% .... after 8 hours on 22% I stopped the proces. Any other ideas?

With a library of 800GB the recovery can take several days.

Let it run and be more patient. Even for a library with just 300GB I had to wait for two days until the recovery has been complete.

If all fails you can recover the photos that are still there by opening the library package contents and copying out the folder "originals". But that will lose all metadata and albums.

Have you been using iCloud Photos? If your photos are in iCloud it will be much faster to recover the Photos Library from iCloud.

To save the photos from the "originals" folder:

  • ctrl-click the old library or right-click it.
  • From the contextual menu that will appear use the command "Show Package contents".
  • In the Finder window that opens copy the folder "originals" to a folder outside the library. To copy instead of moving hold down the options key ⎇ while dragging the folder.
  • Then close the window.

You can create a new, empty library by holding down the options key while launching Photos. This will bring up the library chooser and you can select to create a new, empty library.

Be careful to create this new library in a supported location, either in your Pictures folder or if you are using an external drive, beside you prepare the volume exactly as described here: Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac - Apple Support

Photos cannot work with a Photos Library, if the file system format is not supported or the volume has no wired connection, or if there are Time Machine backups or other backup software installed on the volume.

First, do you have a backup copy? If not, you need to make one. Make a copy of the "Foto's-bibliotheek.photoslibrary" in another folder, at least.

Next, if you can, examine this Library by opening it in Photos' Settings>General:

Is "Copy Items" checked? It normally is. but if this was ever un-checked, then some of your pictures won't be in the Photos Library, and they might be elsewhere on the crashed drive. This might cause the problem in upgrading to the new OS.
