Magic Keyboard On iPad backlights not on

The keys on the Magic Keyboard will not light up. Even in dark conditions. I restarted it . I removed it from the dock and reattached. Updates are current. I added Keyboard brightness to start screen. It wont work. I went into keyboard hardware settings. Nothing there to do.

Any tips please?
