I have old ipod touch gen 2 full of music I want to delete the music and add new ones but itunes can't communicate with it. I don't know the passcode to reset it and itunes can't reset it. I added the songs 7 or more years ago presumably via itunes. I thought perhaps if I installed an old version it too could add new music

Hi thank you for answering. I downloaded the earliest 64 bit version and it was able to communicate with my 32bit ipod.

Very unlikely unless you have a 14 year old computer. You make no mention of what hardware you have other than an iPad Touch. I can tell you for sure that if you have a computer running Mac Music, it will not let you install iTunes unless you are starting to do fancy things with virtualization.
