New MacBook Pro won't start when opening lid or pressing power button

I would plug it in.

I would not expect the battery to be adequately charged without a power source.

Like any new battery-powered device, I would expect to have to allow it to charge for at least Ann hour, preferably overnight, before it was ready for routine use.
