How can I change Finder's scroll position on Mac?

Let's say I have a folder called 'Letters' with 40 documents in it. When I open that folder it opens half way down instead of at the top of that folder. I'm new to Mac so is there a setting I've messed with that says something like 'Remember scroll bar position of a folder I've opened'?

Hello, GetRidAsap!

It sounds like Finder might be remembering the scroll position from the last time you accessed the folder, which can be a bit inconvenient if you'd like it to always open at the top. There's no specific setting for "remembering scroll bar position" in Finder, but here are a few things you can try to fix the issue:

  1. Reset Finder Preferences: Sometimes, Finder's preferences can get corrupted. You can try resetting Finder's preferences:
    • Open Finder, and then click on Go in the menu bar.
    • Hold down the Option key and click Library.
    • In the Library folder, navigate to Preferences.
    • Find and delete the file named com.apple.finder.plist. This will reset Finder settings to their default values.
    • Restart your Mac or relaunch Finder by holding the Option key, right-clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, and selecting Relaunch.
  1. Use List or Column View: If you're using the Icon View, it might cause the folder to open in a slightly different position. Try switching to List View or Column View, which can sometimes offer a more predictable layout:
    • In Finder, go to View in the menu bar and select as List or as Columns.
  1. Adjust Finder Window Size: Sometimes, adjusting the size of the Finder window can help it open in a more consistent position. Try resizing the window to your preferred size and close it. When you reopen the folder, Finder should try to remember this size and open at the top.
  2. Test with Other Folders: Check if the issue is specific to the "Letters" folder or if it happens with other folders as well. If it’s just that folder, try creating a new folder, moving the documents into it, and see if the issue persists.
  3. Disable "Resume" Feature: There's a feature in macOS called Resume, which remembers the state of apps and windows when you shut down or restart. You can try disabling this to see if it helps:
    • Go to System Preferences > General.
    • Uncheck "Close windows when quitting an app".

After trying these steps, let me know if Finder is behaving better!
