2nd Gen Apple Pencil connected to 10th Gen - how?

When I got the 10th Gen in 2023 I got it with a 2nd Gen Apple Pencil. I charged both fully, and they connected. At this time I didn’t find out they weren’t compatible until the Apple Pencil stopped working in the summer of 2024 when I did the research and found out eventually - but I just didn’t believe it since my IPad had bluetooth issues time to time. And from there to now it still doesn’t work, obviously. eventually my belief of them not being compatible picked up, since I couldn’t get them to connect for a while. Was this an update thing or a glitch? It’s just so confusing now that I look back.
