How do I stop my 5th gen iPod from continuously playing downloaded podcasts?

I use my ipod to listen to podcast when Im going to bed at night. Up until last night my old 5th generation Ipod would play a podcast, then stop after it was over and go back to the main menu. Last night it played one podcast after another after another. So it was on all night. Any suggestions on how to reset this ?
