how to FADE IN / OUT an adjustment layer?

I have an adjustment layer with a colour LUT in it. I want it to gradually fade in. Changing the opacity 100% incrementally just makes the screen go black.

If you're using the Custom LUT Effect in Final Cut, then you would need to keyframe the Mix parameter.
