I have done all the correct steps for adding video into a title:
Added the video to the timeline
Added a title above the video in the timeline
Re positioned & sized it
With the Title clip selected go up to the video Inspector
Select the Blend Mode & change from Normal to Stencil Alpha
All I get is a black screen!! Any suggestions?

You want the video below the title to appear through the text?
Restore the text clip's blend mode to normal
Click on the text clip to select it.
Press Control + G to make the text clip a compound clip.
Change the newly made compound clip's blend mode to Stencil Alpha

Meg, I think you meant to type Option + g to create a compound clip.
Why does the title have an image mask? You should remove that.
You are absolutely correct my screen capture was not set up right left over from trying something else to make it work.
Yes you are right and I was wrong - it's Option+G to create the compound clip.
