Your iPod is almost certainly in Repeat 1 mode, which does as it says; repeats one track, that is, the track that is playing.

Find the Repeat option on your iPod. Usually, it will be on the Now Playing screen, although depending which iPod you have, you may need to drag the screen upwards (iPod Touch later versions), or flip the Now Playing screen (2nd generation iPod Touch, I think). If memory serves me well, the iPod Classic is different again, but the option is somewhere on the Now Playing screen.

On nearly every iPod I can think of, the Repeat option cycles from one state to the next, in the following fashion:

    • Off - the repeat function is off. Each song in the current list plays, then the iPod stops. Often there are two arrows, each pointing to the tail of the other. In Repeat is off mode, the arrows are greyed out
    • Repeat - the repeat function is on. Once every song in the current list has played, the list starts again. The arrows will be white
    • Repeat 1 - the repeat 1 song function is on. When that song finishes, it plays again until you stop the iPod or switch to another mode. The white arrows will have a small, 1 in the icon
    • Off - the repeat function is turned off

So tap the repeat icon to turn it from Repeat 1 to Repeat off.
