Restoring music on ipod Nano 6th generation

I recently wanted to copy a couple of songs from a CD to my old ipod Nano. I ended up getting that done but in the process lost all my previous music. I can't seem to get any of my old, purchased songs from Music or iTunes onto the ipod. Any suggestions? I am a Mac user (sequoia). I prefer to use my ipod for working out vs. carrying my phone.
