copying and pasting is great for blocks of text. but not always a winner for groups of files.
Use Drag and Drop, but there is a "trick" to it.
In finder, open the window of the Source files.
choose File > New Window. This opens an ADDITIONAL Finder Window. (that is the essence of the "trick")
in the new window, navigate to the Destination for your files. if you can, place the two finder windows side-by-side, with the same view {List or Column or Icon}.
Drag and Drop files or groups of files between the two similar windows.
The articles D.I. Johnson kindly posted discuss some of the nuances to Drag and Drop.
Reboot and try again.
Are these files and folder on the startup drive?
