Referenced library ... face-recognition ?

So - I really dont want to 'copy-import' all my photos to the library, since they are already neatly organised in folders, and I have them on an external drive and I would like to keep it that way.

But do I loose a lot of functionality when importing photos as referenced files (not copy-importing) ? It doesnt seem to index or do any face-recognition on my photos ?

Hope someone can answer this,

thx :)

Almost no one uses a Referenced Photos Library, and for good reason. So it's going to be hard to finds someone with experience. I have one that I mess with to see what it does, and I just looked -- it has face names, but it has lost the references to the originals. The face names probably were found when that Library was located on the internal drive. Now that I've moved it, it has lost the connections.

Of course, that's why almost nobody uses a Referenced Photos Library-- it severely restricts your ability to move things around. Like you, I also keep the original pictures in Finder Folders, by date, but the organization that I do in Photos lets me have pictures in multiple albums and lets me keep an additional copy--which makes for an important backup system.

Importing folders into Photos can be done so that the folder hierarchy is maintained.
