My iPod shuffle suddenly stopped showing on my computer

I inherited my grandmothers iPod shuffle and I wanted to put my own music on it. I have the correct connector cable that it originally came with but my Mac is a newer model so it doesn't have a usb plug, I finally found the right usb to usb-c connector and so I plugged it into my computer. It worked at first, and I was able to access the proper files. I have a MacBook Air, and I've only owned it for a little under a year. Here's there problem, when I wen't to sync my music with the shuffle, I had to restart the device and delete all previous files. It does this no problem, and then I tried to add my own music from iTunes and suddenly my computer is telling me the device was improperly ejected, except I hadn't remove it. It was still plugged into my computer. I've tried multiple times to get it to show up again, unplugged then plugged back in over and over, unplugged and turned the shuffle off for a minute. But nothing, It was showing up before but know that I've reset the device my computer won't even acknowledge that I've plugged in a foreign device, nor does it show up anywhere in the Finder application. If anyone has had the same problem and fixed it please let me know what to do, this is a sentimental object for me as my gran has had it since I was a child and I love older apple tech and was so thankful I was able to keep it and that it still worked, but know I'm worried that I've damaged something. Thank you in advance for any help anyone can provide :).
