The disk "Volume Name" can't be unlocked. How to fix this flummoxing problem?!?
After relaunching my mac mini with macOS 15.1.1 Sequoia, I was able to unlock four external hard drive connected via USB cables to the mac mini. However, the fifth one had the dialogue box popping up for the prompt to unlock. Then, all of the sudden, the dialogue box "shook" and disappeared. When I checked the Disk Utility, I could see the external drive as connected (Storage Device and Container), but the volume was greyed out. After clicking on First Aid to run the diagnostic tool, I saw this error message popping up:
The disk "Volume Name" can't be unlocked.
A problem was detected with the disk
that prevents it from being unlocked.
I do not know what led to this error message. This has happened to me a few times. Using the search engine to locate the fix has not helped me because some of them were thinly disguised as "articles" written by the third-party companies that provide the disk utilities apps. Some of them mention this problem but offer no fix. So frustrating!
I perused the third-party disk utilities apps, which were able to "unlock" the external drive and listed the data. The thing is that I am not willing to spend $130 or so on those apps to extract all of the data and transfer them to other drive.
Apple could have done better with providing us the tools to fix the password lock problem caused by Apple.
Anyone knows how to fix this problem?
Thanks!
