Keyboard disappears in new email

I see this happened to somebody on their iPad, back in 2023, but I am using my 13Pro iPhone and was typing up an email and after I added two photos to it, I went back to the message and the keyboard would not reappear. The only time I could get the keyboard to appear was when I went up to the subject line. So I had to type what I wanted to say, cut and paste it down into the message. I had never experienced this before. Has anybody else? I do have the iOS 18 update.
