Counting Unique Text in a Column

I have a list of names, some of which are duplicates. I need a formula that tells me how many unique names are in the list. Some people are in 1 class, some are in 2, etc. I just need a way to calculate the total number of unique names in the column no matter how the list is sorted.

One way is to use a filter:




Another way is to use a Pivot Table:


Click in the data table, from the menu choose Organize < Create Pivot Table > On Current Sheet, and drag the relevant field down into the Rows box:




Note that with either method you can then select the visible cells and see the Count at the bottom of the window. In my example the count is 5.
