I use a flat bed scanner, and months is about right. I can scan one album in a day, but then it takes lots of time and work to separate the pictures, edit them so they look nice, add comments from the backs of the pictures, and so on. To get comments that may be on the back, I take the pictures out and scan the backs. It's even harder to put the pictures back in.
For some albums it works better to take the pages out of the books. I imagine that there exist feeders that would go page by page, but I doubt any of us could afford one. I have a printer/scanner that will feed pages, for instance, but even if they fit, it would bend the pictures beyond recovery.

My intention is to get digital copies of the pictures to replace them as the paper decays and turns to dust. If all you want is to show pretty OK pictures to people, then you can just take pictures of pages without all the extra steps.
