Pending Duolingo charge before end of free trial

I did the Duolingo free trial they offer for a week. I had gotten an email saying my trial started the 10th and ended the 17th. To avoid this charge I cancelled it the night on the 15th. Come to find out they had already put a hold on the $187 and they are stating that i had purchased it on the app and I now have the Duolingo max subscription for the year. The charge is still pending and I already requested a refund through apple. Any one else have this problem happen? I’m hoping they drop the charges, but this sucks because I’m now out $187 till this gets figured out. My bank is contacted but they can’t dispute the charge until it actually goes through since it’s still pending. It's ridiculous how they hold the money 2 days before my trial even ends.
