After upgrade to Sonoma, opening of PAGES docs is VERY slow

On two MacBook Air M2, 2022, after upgrade from Ventura to Sonoma opening of PAGES docs is slow, up to a minute for a simple two pager text doc. Opening of PDF happens instantly.

What could cause this?

Pages version 14.2 (7041.0.109), Sonoma 14.6.1

  • I reassigned that PAGES documents will be open with PAGES as a default in Finder, although it was already correctly assigned.
  • I reindexed Spotlight
  • I reinstalled the entire macOS Sonoma from Recovery.
  • I put a test file into a folder, rather than keeping it on the desktop.

The exact observation is, after a restart and waiting for two mins before I tried anything:

  • Double click on PAGES document
  • PAGES loads at acceptable speed
  • The document opens over a minute later.

Working in a document is normal, a new unrelated doc from PAGES template chooser opens normal.

Hello,

Same issue for me. Updated from Ventura to Sonoma (14.1.7) a few days ago and Pages and Numbers are slow to load and respond and save/rename. Takes about 30-60 seconds to load in a document. I am on a MacStudio M1Pro.

I went to the Genius Bar and they couldn't find any issues and the only solution they offered, was to take to computer for further testing. But all diagnostic they were able to run at my appointment showed no issues.

I have uninstalled and installed Pages/Numbers numerous times, etc..no change. I guess the last step will be to do a clean install.

Yes this is the expected behaviour, and I do have it on my own MacBook (Sonoma) and many others. On the shaky MB Air we discus here, it's diffrent. My thinking: Something that links an entry in the ↓⃝

panel on Safari, is broken, and maybe, just maybe, the slow PAGES problem has the same underlying cause, i.e. search for the document until it eventually is found. This should be fixable with a re-indexing of Spotlight, but I tried that and it doesn't work.

Which log would tell me more? Console has now way to many ....

Verify that you have Safari 18.1.1 installed on Sonoma. Might make a difference…

On that Air, and In Safari Settings > Extensions panel, if you have any extensions enabled, temporarily disable them. Also, verify that you have [√] Show features for web developers selected on the Advanced panel. And, that on the General panel, you do not have Open "safe" files after downloading selected. Quit Safari.

Press and hold the shift key while re-launching Safari. Once opened to a blank screen, press option+cmd+E to clear your cache, and Safari menu > Clear History… > [ All history ] and click Clear History. That disposes of any cookies too.

Now, download a file in Safari and then double-click on the completed download ↓⃝ panel. Does it open in Preview?

As for the console (and log) messages… they are written by the macOS product team for their consumption and deliver very little meaning to the rest of us. A good source of eyestrain, and questions. I no longer bother with them anymore. You might see something from Pages or Safari but it is unlikely.
