MacOS Photos app import window too wide

When importing photos from cameras, the import window expands off the right side of the screen, including the import button, and width can't be resized, only height (no matter what method is used). Import from a couple of Fujifilm cameras works fine, except for the window width issue. I've not tried with any other cameras.

M3 Macbook Pro 14 inch Pro. On Sequoia 15, but was an issue on Sonoma as well.

Any ideas? It is very annoying.

That's weird. Try these things to and see what happens:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Those are the easiest things to try. Then try these:

  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

It seems like you're telling us that there's no hope of our giving you a method that works! Are you sure you've tried every possible method? I wish you had let us know what you've tried. Did you click on the little green button

that makes the window the size of the screen? How about ⌘- that makes the thumbnails smaller? Can you grab the window at the top, like where the colored buttons are, and drag the window to the left?

If you've tried those and failed, let us know what else you've tried, and maybe we can thing of something new…

You're sure this isn't from the import pictures--it seems that it worked for the new Library with them, is that right Does this happen even if you import only one picture?

When I import pictures from my camera, I drag them directly from the SD card to an empty album I've created-- I usually don't go through the import process. If I import a single picture, I may just drag it to the Photos icon, and then I go to the Import "album" and drag it where I need it.

Corrupted image files can be a real problem-- it's usually videos, since they are less standardized. One possible way to find a corrupt file is to use a Smart Album with

It really doesn't catch much, but it's easy.

It might be worthwhile to try the trusted 3rd party app PowerPhotos ($30) to bring the original Pictures into a new Library. The free Trial version may do it.

Just thinking through things that I might do…

Thanks. Yes, tried green button, tried zoom and fill from window menu, tried dragging bottom right corner (only changes height). Resized icons - window stays the same width.

I can drag the window to the left, but it remains the same size, so then goes off left hand side.

The odd thing is that it is only the import window that is affected (and goes to that size no matter the initial size of the app window). I can resize as soon as the import is done.

After fiddling, decided just to create a new library, which worked fine, then import the photos and videos from the previous library into it.

Once the import was done, tried importing from camera again into the new library, and the same window width error happened!

So, I think it must either be somehow to do with a malformed photo somewhere in the library, though no idea how, or to do with being the icloud sync'd library, though again, I can't see why that would affect it. I'l try turning icloud off, and if that doesn't do it, give up, because I'm not going through thousands of photos individually.

Thanks Richard. New library - when created but empty - was fine on the import screen from the camera. It was only after the old photos and videos were imported (and icloud syncing turned on) that the screen reverted to the un-resizable and too wide state.

I tried your smart search - for which thanks - and found one video (an iphone video, oddly) unable to sync. Deleted, but still no change on the import screen. So, I think I will give up and adopt your very useful suggestion of just drag and drop instead. It will help me separate the JPG and RAW files too.

Thank you for your time and help.
