click sensitivity adjustment grayed out

I go to System Settiings -> Trackpad to adjust my trackpad click sensitivity, but the 2 sliders for either Tracking Speed or Click are grayed out. I'm unable to use those adjustments, and my click sensitivity is _way_ to touchy. This bums me out as this is a brand new M3 Macbook Air. Force Click is turned off, as well as Data Detectors. Blue Tooth is off too. What da heck is it grayed out for? Accessability settings "seem" normal. Thanks for any thoughts.
