According to MacTracker, there are no 2008 Mac notebooks for which Snow Leopard is the end of the line. Here are the maximum OSes broken down by model.

MacBooks

  • The Early 2008 and Late 2008 models with white plastic cases can run Lion
  • The Late 2008 model with an aluminum case can run El Capitan

MacBook Airs

  • The original MacBook Air can run Lion
  • The MacBook Air (Late 2008) can run El Capitan

MacBook Pros

  • All of the 2008 models can run El Capitan

I assume the reason why is because the 2008 macbook's hardware is too old to meet the minimum requirements needed to run any version of macOS above snow leopard. So, despite the ability of the Intel core 2 Duo to run El Capitan, there are other factors that come into play when determining whether or not a certain model of the MacBook can run a certain version of macOS, such as RAM.
