3rd Gen airpods non wireless charging case

I got my 3rd gen airpods without realizing there was an option to get them with the wireless charging case. I went in to the apple store and they said that the 3rd gen wireless charging case would not be compatible with my 3rd gen airpods that came in the non wireless charging case. Is this true has anyone tried it? If so am I just out of luck and if I want wireless charging I have to get a new set(Which i'm not going to do i'll just be sad)?
