Safari - Mac - Home Depot website

I use the HD website a lot on my Mac using Safari.  About a week ago the search box on HD shrunk and became non-functional on Safari, but it still works on Chrome. Any ideas? For a visual of what I'm talking about I included a picture using both Safari and Chrome. A week ago, when it first happened, I cleared website history on Safari and it began working properly, and then it started doing this again today. I don't want to clear history every time this happens because that clears everything else out, and then I'm constantly logging in to all of my usual sites. This worked for years, and just started about a week ago.

I've included a pic of the site both on Safari and Chrome.

OK, I have found if your Zoom level of the website is set to 50%, then the size will shrink and you will see it eliminate the Search field. That also explains why your page did not seem to appear correctly in your window as noted in your previous screenshot. Click the website settings on the address bar as noted in the red box of the picture below.

Change the Zoom back to 100%, and you will see the site displayed normally. This is the same zoom option that is in the View menu of Safari and you can choose Actual Size.

Works! I don't have that icon in the address bar - I use Monterey on an older MacBook and it's not there. I clicked View, then Zoom In and the box gets bigger, but so does the entire page, so it looks odd. Then I go back to Actual Size or just Zoom Out and the box is small again. But this is still a very helpful thing, zooming in, do the search, and then can always zoom out. Thanks for finding this.

Another website specific setting you may be able to check is Page Zoom. When viewing the Home Depot site, go to Safari > Settings > Websites > Page Zoom. It should show as 100% for the Home Depot site.

I don't know if you have experimented with any of the Feature Flags in Safari, but maybe go to Safari > Settings > Feature Flags > Reset Feature Flags.

I have tried changing some just to see if I can reproduce what you are seeing, just in case that could be it, but have not found anything that would do that.

I would also try starting up in Safe Mode, just to make sure there is nothing loading that would cause the conflict. Restarting again normally will exit Safe Mode.

  • Are you using a VPN?
  • Do you have any Extensions installed at Safari > Settings > Extensions?
  • Post a screenshot of what you see by going to the Home Depot link.

I have used the site on Safari with a Mac, iPhone, and iPad for years without any trouble, so there is something specific with your configuration that is causing the problem.

I'm using the current Safari 18.1 with macOS 15.1 and haven't experienced that issue and I don't have anything to suggest that might help.

However, regarding

I don't want to clear history every time this happens because that clears everything else out, and then I'm constantly logging in to all of my usual sites

If you go to Settings (or previously Preferences) on the Safari menu and click "Privacy" in the bar at the top and the click "Manage Website Data" you can enter "homedepot" (no spaces) in the search box, you can then remove just Home Depot Cache, Cookies, etc without affecting other sites.

That doesn't resolve your issue but may make it a bit easier to deal with in the meantime.

I tried two resolutions that I use and the symptoms are different for each.

1920x1080. Search works with zoom set to 175, 200, 250 and 300. 50, 75, 85, 100, 115, 125 and 150 did not work.

3840x2160 Can see a sliver of the search field with zoom at 115 which makes it usable. No search input field with zoom set at 100 or lower. Above 115 works, but 125 is a bigger sliver as well.
