Using a Late 2013 iMac as a target display

I'd like to know if I can use my 27 inch, late 2013 imac as an extra display to my 2017 iMac using usb-c to the mini display port on the 2013 imac. Please advise. Thank you!

  • ❝The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 cable.❞

This is from the Apple link provided above by @dialabrain: The cable...MUST BE a Thunderbolt 1 or 2 cable. Those will have the Thunderbolt logo at each end. USB-C to MDP won't cut it. The target Mac MUST be running High Sierra or earlier. The other Mac must be a 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier.

You'd be wise to simply buy an inexpensive monitor for whichever iMac you feel needs a second. It's simpler to setup, less expensive to run (less power required v. an iMac computer) and works every time.

Yes.

However, to do this, the older Mac must be running High Sierra or earlier, and the newer one must be running Catalina or earlier. You might not want to hobble the newer one that way.

Also, a USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter will not work. Right physical connectors, wrong kind of signal. You would need a $50 Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter and a $30+ Thunderbolt 1/2 cable.

All in all, it likely would not be worth it, especially since $300-$350 is now enough to get a decent, if basic, 27” 2.5K or 4K display.
