Photos imported from Google Photos to Apple Photos increased in size >3x!

Hi all. I used the Google Takeout utility to import 11Gb of photos and videos from Google Photos to Apple Photos. The photos at Google were all saved with the smaller 'storage saver' setting. The transfer was a smooth process. However, that 11Gb of files from Google are now taking up more than 35Gb of space on Apple Photos. Why did this happen? What is the solution?
