Several times, I have set an alarm to go off prior to an appointment in my calendar, but NO alarm sounds. I have missed at least three appointments this year because I have depended on the alarm to remind me. How do I correct this?

The answer to my own question is this:
“Notifications” must be turned “on” in “Settings” in order for the Apple IPhone Calendar alarm to sound.
(Wouldn’t it be great if, when setting an alarm, a pop-up appeared, as it does in many other apps, indicating “Notifications” are turned “off” and providing a link to “Settings” to change it to “on?”)
My alarm is not ringing for Calendar events
