Internal Memory Issue with MacBook Air using Apple Intelligence

After becoming frustrated with Windows Operating Systems and conducting extensive research on MacBook models over the course of a year, I made the decision to purchase an M2 MacBook Air base model with 8GB of memory in September 2024. At that time, Apple had not publicly disclosed that this memory capacity would pose any challenges in running Apple Intelligence. However, as of October 2024, the same model is now available with a significantly increased 16GB of memory. The primary concern that I have is the substantial lag that I have been experiencing while utilizing Apple Intelligence. As Apple Intelligence increasingly demands the use of my MacBook Air’s 8GB of RAM, I anticipate further performance issues in the future. My current MacBook Air is unlikely to be able to effectively handle the demanding tasks associated with AI. During the first week of November 2024, a web search recommendation posted by Apple Intelligence suggested that a MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM would be optimal for performance. This recommendation aligns with my own experience and implies that 8GB of memory may not be sufficient for demanding AI tasks. Notably, MacBook Air models are now available with 16GB of RAM to support the Apple Intelligence features. Given that the cause and effect of this situation can be attributed to a decision made by Apple, it raises questions about the implications for consumers of 8GB MacBook models. Could you please provide some insight into the situation for consumers who purchased a MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM? Are they expected to endure this limitation and trade in their devices for upgraded models?

This isn't Apple-- we're just users like you, and we don't have any special knowledge about this. I would suggest that you contact Apple Support directly. If possible, I think the best thing would be to go to an Apple Store--you'd think that they would be prepared for your questions.

Good Luck.
