can't take a screenshot

My desktop mac doesn't seem to be able to take a screenshot anymore. I use command-shift-4, and the crosshairs appear, but as soon as I release the mouse click, nothing happens. I have scoured every file to see if the screenshots are ending up filed in a weird place, but nothing. I have restarted my computer, I have checked to see if the keyboard shortcuts are correct, nothing.
