macos sonoma keeps hiding files on desktop

After upgrading to Sonoma I discovered that all of the files I have on my desktop are now hidden. I know they're there because when I hit Cmd-Shft-. they all appear. But so do all of the other hidden files, littering up all of my lists in windows. I have tried several of the Terminal commands found online but nothing works. Yet all of my drive icons are there; only the files are hidden.


I'm on a MacBook Pro 2021 M1.


Solutions???
