photos isa mess since the last iOS update

I can no anger download photos out of my phone onto my computer and edit them in photos. I have to go to iCloud online and download them but it takes a huge amount of time for them to show up there now as well. I see online many people complaining about the way photos on the hone operates or loos now but that isn't my problem. I just toggled most of the new formats off and it looks okay and donl;t do any phot editing on my phone at all so I need to see them on my 27 " screen and edit them right inside of photos and the make folders and out them all away when I'm done but I can no longer do that. Here's what photos looks like when I open it now. It is completely dysfunctional now.

How frustrating! I, too, can't imagine doing much editing on the tiny iPhone screen! But Photos has been working fine for me, and I haven't had this problem at all. You didn't say what iPhone model you have or what iOS you're using. I have an iPhone 12 now running iOS 18.1, and my M3 MacBook has macOS 15.1. Everything has worked through the updates.

On your phone, Have you tried a forced restart?

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

For the Mac, the first things to try are these:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

Those are the most important things to try first. It may fix the problem. If not, try these:

  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.
  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.

Let us know how it goes…

I've had no luck fixing anything. Most of the complaints and fixes I've seen suggested are from people who use their phone almost exclusively for photo editing and storage and my problem hasn't been mentioned yet that I know of anyway. Most complaints seem to be about the new formatting of the folders on the phone, most of which you can toggle off. It's still not as good as before though. It's confusing. I don't use my phone to format pictures, make folders or anything like that. I wear three different focal length eyeglasses now and the line is just too small to work with and I have fat carpenter fingers which always overlap on things and make mistakes. I've resigned myself to just downloading everything from photos and doing everything manually. Hopefully, if enough people make enough noise about this Apple will fix it with an update soon.
