"Discovering" Bluetooth headphones

I am having difficulty getting my bluetooth headphones connecting to my new iMac. They aren't "recognized" by new iMac M3 / OS. 14.6.1. The Headphones are a little over 1 year old. Any suggestions? Do I have to change other settings?

first time you connect a headset to a device it is required to be put into pairing / discovery mode

how you go about doing so differ from headset to headset

a quick google for

<name of headset> pairing mode

should likely give you a guide

also make sure the headset is not having an active connection to another device, like my headset likes to auto connect to my iPhone when ever it's turned on, if I wish to pair it with another device I need to disconnect it from the iPhone first or disable Bluetooth on the iPhone while I pair it with the new device
