Multiple instances of chrome in Privacy & Security - local network access

Since upgrading to 15.0 I get asked fairly regularly if I want chrome to have access to the local network. It now looks like every time I say yes, I get another copy added to the privacy an security settings.

I had this same issue - as well as not being able to access local networks via IP address, like my NAS server or internet router etc..

I could access it in Safari, but could not access it in Chrome no matter what I did. Toggling any of the 10+ instances of Chrome in the Local Networks tab via Privacy & Security tab wouldn't do anything either. I tried all of the cache clearing and DNS setting/resetting, messing with IP/DNS settings, etc... to no avail.

The resolution was getting Chrome to trigger Apple to ask me to 'allow this app to access devices on your local network' and clicking 'allow'.

I followed a combination of what others have said here with success. This was my process:

  1. Shut down MacBook Pro, leaving the 're-opoen windows' checkbox UN-checked
  2. Hold shift, press power button, and keep holding shift all the way through until the lock-screen
  3. Sign in
  4. Open Finder > Applications Folder
  5. Right click "Google Chrome" and click the trash icon (delete chrome) - it should now be in your trashcan
  6. Open trash can, click empty trashcan
  7. Open Terminal (press command + spacebar and type 'Terminal' and hit enter - it should open)
  8. Without typing anything else, enter the following command without the parenthesis: "sudo tccutil reset SystemPolicyNetworkVolumes" and hit enter
  9. You should be prompted on the next line to enter your password - enter your password that you log in to your computer with and hit enter (you should get a success notification on the next line down)
  10. Before restarting; Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network - you should not see any instances of 'Google Chrome' in here anymore
  11. Close out of everything, and hit Apple Icon (top left) > Restart... and restart again leaving the 're-open windows' checkbox UN-checked
  12. Log in like normal, and repeat step 10 above - you should still not see chrome on this list
  13. Open Safari, and re-download Google Chrome following instructions once opening download file
  14. Eject the Google Chrome install media on your desktop
  15. Open/launch Chrome - you should still be logged into your chrome profile (if you aren't then don't worry about logging back in yet)
  16. Try to access your Router or other local network device via IP address/domain
  17. **WAIT (do nothing)** until Apple/MacOS notification pops up and asks if you want to allow Google Chrome to access devices on your local network
  18. CLICK ALLOW for the love of all things good
  19. If you're a dingus and failed to click allow then start back at step one; Otherwise continue on to step 20
  20. Repeat step 10 above - you should see only one instance of Google Chrome with the toggle turned on.
  21. If that's all you were seeking to accomplish then congrats - you did it! Otherwise continue to step 22:
  22. Enjoy accessing your local networks without issue

This is absolutely an Apple bug that needs to be fixed. For reference I am on a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro (base model) running Sequoia 15.5 displaying 'up to date' post-checking for updates, and running the latest version of Chrome (Version 137.0.7151.56 (Official Build) (arm64)). Note that I was up to date on both MacOS and Chrome when the issues were originally happening as well.

Everything is finally working - I'm sure I declined the Apple/MacOS notification originally, which initiated these issues. But that again shouldn't mean that the toggle in MacOS settings won't work/do anything/add a plethora of worthless instances of Chrome within the local network settings.

Hope this helps someone else who has spent hours banging their head on the counter whilst trying to setup a new NAS or other network device like I have been.

Good luck.

This problem is present with the Windows App on a computer I manage. We've uninstalled the app, which Local Network Privacy retains the instances in the window. One of the instances becomes named "Microsoft Remote Desktop" which is the former name of the Windows App.

The Windows App also doesn't work with one network. We've toggled the settings on and off. If I create a new profile on the Mac, the new profile works fine with the problematic network. If we connect to another network, the Windows App works correctly. Other machines can connect to the network without issue with the Windows App.

There needs to be a way to totally delete and reset the settings here. There are clearly bugs with how the apps are registered with the Local Network Privacy that doesn't remove them properly. There are bugs with how the macOS is retaining settings incorrectly no matter how many times you toggle them on or off.

I've tried most things to try and remove the repetitive items from chrome and the top rated reply did not work.

I stopped short of deleting files from a library (cant recall the name right now.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome numerous times and it never stuck. I even reinstalled the OS. Nothing.

It appears you need to uninstall Chrome in Safe Boot mode specifically. Hope that helps.

If the problem comes back after the next chrome update(as other posts have alluded to it returning after) I'll edit this.

Hi,

Running MacOS Sequoia 15.1.1.

I have the same issue. 3 Google Chrome switches with the same behavior. When switching on/off all the other switches would follow the same state.

I followed your instructions: I completely uninstalled Google Chrome and deleted all the folder inside ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome (WARNING: do this only if you are ready to loose all your Google Chrome data including saved bookmarks)

Then I did a startup in safe mode an then restarted as suggested.

Now I rechecked the items on the Local Network settings and google chrome is still there but now it has no icons.

Furthermore the switches have a strange behavior. If I click on the last google chrome icon nothing happens if the first one is enabled, while it activates the first one if disabled.

I am attaching an animation of the behavior to better understand.

I wonder if Apple even realize that this has actually not been fixed?

There are so many "Thank you, this solved my issue" in this thread, - but there is no ACTUAL fix from Apple.

I still need to be very careful when there is an update for Chrome.

If I just update Chrome - then I no longer have access to my Local Network in Chrome (which is my office network).

Under Preferences->Local Network I can turn one of (25+) Chromes on and off as much as I like, but I will not have access, until my Mac finally decides to ask me if I will allow access.

And that happens at random times. (usually a few days. Some times a little longer.)

It does not help to uninstall and reinstall Chrome.

It does not help to restart the computer.

Or combine the above with Local Network access for Chrome on or off.

I don't care about the many Chromes in the Local Network access list.

It is ugly, but I don't mind.

As long as it works.

But it does not.

It is GIGANTICALLY annoying.

Try the following: Find Any File can help in removing leftover components of apps that have been deleted.  Do the following:

#1 - boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take 2 -3 minutes as it's doing the following:• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

#2 - download and run the shareware app Find Any File to search for any files with the application's or the developer's name in the file name.  For Chrome browser software you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains chrome

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop or Trash bin in the Dock for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

#3 - reboot normally.

All I can say is that Chrome is not even listed in my local network settings and yet the Chrome browser continues to function properly on my M1 Studio Max running Sequoia 15.1.1. I don get those prompts at all. Maybe turn off all the switches and the next time you get the prompt say no. See what happens.

What I do get that annoys the crap out of me is Youtube telling me my Safari browser is not secure and that I should switch to another browser. I wonder which browser Youtube wants me to switch to? Those low-lifes at Google, that’s all I can say.

On my Mac, multiple Chrome entries appear under the LocalNetwork option, even after removing Chrome from the system(under System Preferences > Privacy & Security > Local Network).

I’m still looking for a solution to the problem because after reinstalling Chrome, I can no longer grant permission to the local network, and I believe the issue is related to that.

What I've Tried:

Resetting Permissions: Ran tccutil reset All com.google.Chrome in Terminal. Editing the TCC Database: Backed up the TCC.db and used an SQLite command to delete Chrome entries. Verifying Installations: Confirmed there's only one Chrome installation (no beta or Canary versions). None of these steps resolved the issue.

On the image, sometimes the toggles are randomly on or off, and clicking on any of them won't change their state.
