Solution for Apple Mail/spotlight searching crashes after OS 14 Sonoma upgrade for non-admin user

  1. log in your account (non-admin) in the system;
  2. go to the system setting;
  3. do some setting changes that need admin permission (e.g., change the lock screen time);
  4. ask your admin to input the admin username and password;
  5. now searching in mail/spotlight and other places (like system preference and Apple Music) should work again.


It seems necessary to input the admin username and password once to let the system rebuild the index. Otherwise, the mail/spotlight is stuck on indexing, and nothing changes.
