MacBook Pro M1 Pro issue with dual display after updating to macOS Sequoia 15.1

Hello,

Yesterday I updated my MacBook Pro M1 Pro to macOS Sequoia 15.1.

All the time I have my laptop connected to an external display. After the update, instantly I got a problem where randomly my external monitor is turning off (like when you are unplugging the external display cable or stopping the "extended screen" from settings) and the main screen (that is on my external display) is moving to the laptop and in just one second, the monitor is "turning on" and everything is back to normal.

This is happening like 1 time each 2 3 minutes which is really annoying.

What I tried so far and the issue persist:

  1. Change with 3 other cables - Same issue
  2. Using another monitor - Same issue
  3. Restart laptop

Finally the issue for me is solved. Instead of using a HDMI to USB-C adapter I purchased a DisplayPort 1.4 to USB-C adapter connected to the Dell G3223Q 32" and no more issues. I also deleted the display preferences files in MacOS:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.displays.plist

/Users/<YourUser>/Library/Preferences/byHost/com.apple.windowserver.displays.<ALPHANUMERIC_CODE>.plist

In the last case, it can be multiple files.

And then restart. I hope it can help

Having the same issue, Anker 778 with a 4k@120hz monitor connected through it is flickering, if I change it to 60hz it works fine, with les intermittent flickering, issue only comes when I set it to 120hz or higher. My third monitor which is connected directly to my M1 pro is not having issues and it is also running at 4k@120hz. Another set of users experiencing same issues only most of us there are using a dock, but it appears issues are ocuring with different kinds of TB docks.

very annoying.

Having the same issue with the new update and has happened twice while typing this reply - smh. Tried the suggestions found here and other websites with no avail. The only temporary work around I found is the prevent my MacBook Air M1 to go into sleep mode, which is not ideal. My external monitor will still go black, but will not require me to enter my password to get back in to my laptop every time.

Apple really needs to put out a patch or update to fix this screw up.

If anyone is interested, here is what I found to keep your machine from entering sleep mode:

If for some reason your display stops sending power to your MacBook Air and the MacBook is in clamshell it will automatically sleep. If you want to experiment to see if this is happening you can use a command line pmset command to force your MacBook to stay wake in battery clamshell.

sudo pmset disablesleep 1

To set it back to normal

sudo pmset disablesleep 0

Obviously if you use a standard charger that would also be a good test.

Having said all this, I’ve never heard of a case where a display power delivery stopped sending power. That would be strange since even a sleeping portable needs to be charged.

I finally upgraded to Sequoia last Thursday. My external monitor, which has worked flawlessly for 10+ years, blacks out randomly; pressing space bar wakes it back up after 10-15 seconds. Time between blackouts varies from 5 minutes to 5 hours. This has to be a software issue, nothing else has changed. MacBook Pro M1, Sequoia 15.3.2, Apple Play Display 23" via a Benfei adapter that goes direct to one of the MacBook's USB ports. I've tried changing some of the "suggested" display settings, mirroring the screen with my laptop, and switching between using a USB mouse & keyboard to Bluetooth. No change. I've read many posts here and on other sites and the best answer seems to be this is a Sequoia glitch that Apple needs to fix. Here's hoping that 15.3.3 or soon after fixes this frustrating problem.

Literally having the same issue: my setup is MacBook Pro m1- Aker 7 in 1 - and lg external monitor. The screen goes blank continuously, I had resolved the issue by downgrading to Mac OS Sonoma and just wait to update again, unfortunately the auto-updater had other ideas. So yeah it's a software issue, I bought new cables and I was still having the problem even with an hdmi instead of thunderbolt.

OK, this is basically my set up and I got frustrated and tired of waiting. The Caldigit T2 was on sale on Amazon so I got it and needed an DisplayPort to HDMI adapter… but it works!!! So maybe this is something with USB-C to HDMI or maybe it’s the Anker hub? It sounds like other people had a more direct USB-C to HDMI, so it seems like it’s that. But why would Displayport to HDMI be better? Now it’s perfect again though.

I have experienced similar problems as others here after upgrading to macOS Sequoia 15.1. My configuration: a MacBook Pro (M3, 16") connected to two monitors via an Anker 778 Thunderbolt Docking Station (version 1.2.7). The monitor connected via USB-C to DisplayPort regularly goes black for 2-3 seconds every few minutes, while the monitor connected via HDMI works perfectly.

Before updating to macOS 15.1, I had no problems with version 14.7.1. I have already taken several steps, including changing cables, restarting and checking the connection configuration, but to no avail.

It seems that this is a software issue that hopefully Apple will fix soon. Has anyone found a permanent solution yet or any news on a possible fix?

I had the same issue with Sequoia 15.1 and found a software update under software updates in system settings that fixes the issue for me. I tried to post it here, but Apple deleted my post to tell everyone the fix (because they don't appear to care about any of their users actually being able to use any of their hardware or software?). If anyone can find a way to update to a newer Sequoia version then this is what worked for me.
