The Mail on my Mac Book Pro is defective
apple mail on my mac keeps opening new windows to compose mail, but they aren't viable and won't close. I have to shut down the mail app to get the multiple windows to go away.

I would look for an unsent email stuck in the Outbox of one of your email accounts. Remove the unsent email typically fixes the issue...
This can happen for various reason— one ex sent email with an attachment too big and gets rejected by the mail server.
Delete the mail from the Outbox—If you do not see it, quit the Mail.app and relaunch it holding down the Shift key and The Outbox should appear.
